Level and Prerequisites
This module is appropriate for the first term of general chemistry. No prerequisites are required, however, it is helpful if students have an understanding of atomic structure.

Chemistry Content Objectives

  • Chemical bonding including electron dot structures, VSEPR theory and hybrid orbital theory.
  • Polymerization reactions including free radical additions and elimination reactions.
  • Intermolecular forces.
  • Introduction to organic chemistry including organic nomenclature and notation and functional groups.

Description

This module is designed to help students learn about chemical bonding, polarity, intermolecular forces and the impact of chemical structure on the properties of materials by focusing on polymers. As we learn about the chemistry of polymers, we will also learn how it overlaps with other disciplines and areas of life including material science and recycling.
