Standard Electrode
(Half-Cell) Potentials Eo
A standard electrode potential always refers to the half-reaction written
as a reduction:
Oxidized form + n e- reduced form Eohalf-cell
Reversing a reaction changes the sign of the potential:
Reduced form oxidized form + n e- - Eohalf-cell
For the zinc-copper reaction:
Zn2+(aq) + 2 e- Zn(s) Eozinc (Eoanode ) [reduction]
Cu2+(aq) + 2 e- Cu(s) Eocopper(Eocathode ) [reduction]
