EMF and Free-Energy Change

We can show that

_G = -nFE

_G is the change in free-energy, n is the number of moles of electrons transferred, F is Faradayís constant, and E is the emf of the cell.

We define

C = Coulomb, the charge of 6.242 x 1018 electrons

V = Volt (the electric potential)

Since n and F are positive, if _G > 0 then E < 0.
